Expert Guide Hub
Part of our Pediatric Dentistry comprehensive series.
Many parents are surprised to learn that the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry both recommend a child’s first dental visit by their first birthday — or within six months after their first tooth appears. At AZ Dental Club, we make these early visits gentle, positive, and educational for both children and parents.
Why So Early?
Baby teeth may be temporary, but they play a critical role in your child’s development. Early dental visits allow us to:
- Check for early signs of tooth decay, even in infants
- Assess jaw development and bite alignment
- Apply fluoride or sealants to protect vulnerable teeth
- Educate parents on diet, thumb-sucking, and bottle habits
- Build a dental home where your child feels safe and comfortable
Children who start dental visits early are far less likely to develop dental anxiety later in life.
What Happens at a First Visit?
A child’s first appointment at AZ Dental Club is designed to be short, sweet, and stress-free. Here is what you can expect:
- Meet the team — your child gets to know our friendly staff and explore the office
- Knee-to-knee exam — for infants, the parent holds the child while we examine their mouth
- Gentle cleaning — if appropriate, we polish any visible teeth
- Parent education — we review brushing techniques, diet, and what to expect as more teeth erupt
- Q&A — bring your questions about teething, pacifiers, fluoride, and anything else on your mind
Building Healthy Habits at Home
The habits you establish today shape your child’s oral health for decades. Here are our top pediatric dentistry tips:
- Brush twice daily — use a rice-grain-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste for children under three; a pea-sized amount for ages three to six
- Limit sugary snacks and drinks — especially juice and milk at bedtime
- Avoid bottle decay — never put your baby to bed with a bottle of milk, formula, or juice
- Model good behavior — let your child see you brushing and flossing
- Make it fun — use timers, songs, and reward charts to build positive associations
When to Call the Dentist Between Visits
Even with regular check-ups, issues can arise. Call AZ Dental Club if your child experiences:
- Tooth pain that lasts more than a day
- Swelling or a pimple on the gums
- A chipped or knocked-out tooth from a fall
- Persistent thumb-sucking past age four
- Crowding or bite issues as permanent teeth come in
Our Kid-Friendly Offices
All three AZ Dental Club locations — Phoenix, Tempe, and Glendale — welcome children with open arms. Our team understands that kids need patience, explanations they can understand, and a little fun to feel at ease.
